Billing meter verification
When a water or thermal bill jumps and nobody can explain why, the fastest way to settle it is an independent measurement on the same pipe. Renting a meter for a week costs a fraction of a disputed quarter.
Why permanent meters drift and clamp-ons do not
Mechanical and turbine meters have moving parts in the flow stream. Bearings wear, impellers erode, and the error is almost always in the direction of over-registration once wear sets in. Electromagnetic meters do not wear, but their electrodes foul and their calibration ages. An ultrasonic clamp-on has nothing in the flow path at all, which is precisely why it is used as the reference.

Running a defensible verification
- Pick a measurement point with genuine straight run. Ten diameters upstream and five downstream. If you compromise here, the other party will point at it.
- Record the pipe data you entered. Outside diameter measured, not assumed. Wall thickness measured. Lining noted. This is the part that gets challenged.
- Log rather than spot read. A week of parallel data against the billing meter is far more persuasive than three instantaneous readings.
- Ask for the calibration certificate. It ships free with the rental. A verification carried out with an uncertified instrument is easy to dismiss.
- Compare totalised volume, not instantaneous rate. Instantaneous readings on two instruments will never match exactly. Totals over a week should.
Thermal billing disputes
On BTU billing, the dispute is usually about delta-T rather than flow. A permanent meter with a failed temperature sensor can report plausible-looking energy that is substantially wrong.
