Damage and insurance
Instruments go to construction sites, plant rooms and flooded chambers. Things happen. Here is how we handle it.
Fair wear, not chargeable
- Coupling gel residue on the case and transducer faces
- Scuffs and marks on the housing, rail and cables
- Used batteries
- General grime from a working site
Chargeable damage
- Crushed, cut or pulled-out transducer cable
- Cracked transducer housing or display
- Water ingress on an IP50 sensor that has been submerged. If the sensors are going into a wet chamber, ask for the IP68 option at booking — it costs nothing extra and prevents exactly this.
- Missing items from the case
- Loss or theft of the unit
Chargeable damage is billed at repair cost, or replacement cost where the unit cannot economically be repaired. We will tell you the figure before we bill it, and we will send photographs.
Your own cover
Most contractors' general liability and inland marine policies cover rented or leased equipment in their care. If yours does, that is normally the cleanest route for anything significant. Check your policy limit for rented equipment before the meter arrives rather than after something happens to it.
Practical prevention
- Route the transducer cable away from walkways and anywhere a scissor lift might travel.
- Specify IP68 sensors for pits, chambers, outdoor installs and anywhere that floods.
- On long deployments, secure the sensors and protect the cable at the pipe.
- Repack in the case cut-outs. Most transport damage happens to instruments returned loose in a box.
